Review: Pet [Eco] Project

Layla_and_GracieWhen measuring the human impact on the environment through an ecological footprint, it is important to consider and mitigate the subsequent paw-print left behind by “man’s best friend”.  The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that more than 57 percent of American households own at least one pet, a fact reinforcing the importance that this companionship provides such a large number of families. For those that are not allergic to our four-legged friends, this companionship seems to be good for our health as well.  Numerous studies indicate a correlation between pet ownership and physical and mental health.  However, these benefits of pet ownership need not come with a greater toll on the environment.  There are a number of eco-friendly options for the incentive-conscious pet owner to take. Seeing as we have two young dogs, my family considers these recommendations as great opportunities to both save money and reduce our impact on the environment. Layla and Gracie, both energetic Vizslas, are very integral to our family, so it is important that we make informed decisions regarding our care of them.

An owner should first consider the type of food that his or her pet is consuming.   (more…)

Review: Drop Me a [Clothes] Line

ClotheslineI have always loved the idea of drying clothes the “natural way.”  (Emphasis on the word “idea” in the previous sentence.)  While I grew up in a household where using a clothesline was a normal part of summer life, I never actually put one up in any of my own homes.  I tried, mind you, but there were always reasons why it would not work.  I made a few unsuccessful attempts throughout the years but eventually accepted defeat until my resourceful husband surprised me with two clotheslines creatively secured across parts of our yard, and I have been enjoying more than just the idea of drying our laundry outdoors.

I have been having a positive experience with this new behavior:  I save money on electricity, my clothes feel and smell fresh, and I spend more time outside.  There are a few drawbacks, though, which is why I am not ready to retire my Energy Star dryer for good.  (more…)

Review: Greening Your Grin

ToothpasteConsidering the ADA recommended 3-month lifespan of my toothbrush was about to expire, I browsed the dental products at my local Whole Foods. The “greenest” item immediately caught my eye. Literally, this toothbrush has a handle produced out of recycled dollar bills. The manufacturer is Radius, a company that specializes in sustainable toothbrushes. I purchased the company’s Source model. This line promotes its bio-plastic handles, which, aside from dollar bills, are made from recycled flax, wood, and plastic. This equates to 93% of toothbrush waste being eliminated as only the surgical grade nylon head needs replacement.

After further inspection of the product, I learned that the environmental benefits do not stop there. The packaging itself boasts sustainable material. The plastic is 100% recycled PET and the card-backing is 100% recyclable, with product information printed using eco-friendly inks. These packaging features alone reduce plastic content by 30% and increase renewable resources content to 65%. (more…)
